CURE CREW
A lifelong Southington resident, Ava Bedard became a “Y kid” at a very young age—participating in many Southington-Chesire YMCA classes, camps, and programs. In July of last year, at the age of fifteen and having just completed time as a counselor in training at Camp Sloper, Ava was shockingly diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma—a very rare form of cancer.
Over the course of approximately nine months, Ava courageously and somehow gracefully endured fourteen rounds of chemotherapy and over forty rounds of proton radiation. Thanks to the heroes at Connecticut Children’s and Massachusetts General Hospital, Ava was declared to be in remission as of April of this year!
Ava returned to school this year as a junior at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington. Ava’s younger sister, Olivia, joined her this year as a freshman at Miss Porter’s. In addition to Ava’ life-saving medical treatment and the love and support from friends and family, the love and support throughout Ava’s treatment from the Miss Porter’s community helped Ava and the Bedard family get through some of the darkest of days.
Friends and families of Miss Porter’s—including students, parents, teachers, and administrators—have banded together as the Cure Crew to help raise funds to beat childhood cancer. The race fee to run or walk is $30. $20 goes to the race and $10 goes to the Cure Crew. The Cure Crew’s proceeds from this race will be donated to Connecticut Children’s to help support treatment for children who are battling critical illnesses.
In addition to their own race entry fees, Paul & Sylvia Bedard, Ava’s parents, will be supplementing funds raised via an additional family donation. Please consider joining the Cure Crew to raise funds for Connecticut Children’s. If you would like to donate but cannot participate in the race, please contact Paul Bedard at [email protected]
