Welcome to our YMCA

Being part of our Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs is much more than joining a gym, taking a swim, enrolling in child care programs or going to day camp.

To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

What sets the Y apart is our 80 plus years of community service as a charitable organization, dedicated to creating opportunities to enhance the quality of living within the community. The programs at our YMCA encourage healthy lifestyles and are accessible to ALL regardless of financial circumstance. When you join the YMCA you become a member of a worldwide organization whose mission is to help children, families and communities reach their greatest potential. YMCA membership and involvement represents not only an investment in yourself, but also in your community.

The Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA employs nearly 400 staff and recruits over 600 volunteers.  Our YMCA staff and volunteers are well-trained, certified in their field and are caring and committed individuals. Every day, we strive to live the YMCA’s mission to deliver the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all that we do.

To maximize your YMCA experience and membership to the fullest, you can also give back and reach out to your community as a Y Volunteer or through various Y philanthropic opportunities. Giving of your time, treasure or talent makes it possible for your Y to continue to provide the programs and services it offers. Equally important, it allows you to grow personally and experience the joy of giving.

Your YMCA membership opens up a world of fitness options and recreational activities to individuals and families of any age.  Y members get full access to the total facility that includes our pool, gymnasium, racquetball courts, weights and cardio equipment as well as our off-site facilities including: Cheshire Community YMCA facilities, The Women’s Health & Wellness Center (in Southington), our YMCA Learning Center, the YMCA Gymnastics Center, and YMCA Camp Sloper Outdoor Center. Our programs are designed to accommodate every age group from preschoolers to seniors.  The opportunities are endless for you and your family at the YMCA!

To underscore our commitment, YMCA staff and volunteers take pride in giving our members the personal attention and service they deserve. Facility tours and orientations, personalized fitness assessments, personal training appointments and programs are some of the many ways to help you achieve your health and wellness goals.

There is no greater gift that you can give yourself than a fit and healthy spirit, mind and body. Membership at the Y supports your choice to commit and invest in your health and well-being.  We are here as your partner in achieving your fitness goals and a healthier lifestyle which will positively affect the overall quality of your daily life, today and down the road.

At the Y, you do not have to worry about being locked into a contract. Memberships are continuous and flexible. We encourage you to stop by the YMCA and discover for yourself how the YMCA changes lives. Our doors are always open.

Activate Southington

activate america

Activate Southington is town-wide initiative funded through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The grant program is administered by the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Activate Southington is supported by a leadership team representing the greater Southington community.

Activate Southington is a collaboration between town, business and community leaders to identify opportunities to improve our community and take positive steps toward a healthy lifestyle. Activate Southington’s mission is to improve the overall health and wellness of Southington residents, and decrease the incidence of childhood obesity, by providing opportunities for active living, healthy eating, and physical activity...

The 40 Developmental Asset Approach
The YMCA embraces the 40 Developmental Assets in all our programs.  The assets are a framework that identifies crucial relationships, experiences, opportunities and personal qualities that children and adolescents need as they grow to become healthy, caring and responsible adults.  The developmental assets are building blocks of healthy development that include internal and external assets such as family support, community values, school involvement, adult role models, creative activity, achievement, motivation, integrity, planning, decision making and personal power.
The assets clearly show important roles that families, schools, congregations, neighborhoods, youth organizations and others in communities play in shaping young people's lives. They provide a powerful framework and lens for how YMCAs engage children, youth, families and communities.

If you can say “hi” or wave you can start building assets.  Here are some easy ways to get started.

  • Get to know young people
  • Ask kids for their help
  • Spend time with kids
  • Treat kids with respect
  • Set boundaries and limits
  • Speak out for children and youth
  • Listen when children talk
  • See past their appearance

Southington’s Town-wide Effort to Promote Success (STEPS) is an asset based prevention coalition that is following the Search Institutes 40 Developmental Asset Model. Our coalition is made up of leaders from every sector of the Southington community, all with the same intentions of ensuring our youth grow up to be caring, competent and successful individuals. Our members come from the following sectors: Substance Prevention programs, our local media, the Southington Board of Education and school system, our local government and Town Council, healthcare professionals, several civic and volunteer groups, the United Way of Southington, religious and fraternal organizations, the Southington Police and Fire Departments, the Southington YMCA, Southington Youth Services, the Southington Chamber of Commerce, parents, PTO groups and most importantly, our youth. We are all very dedicated to work together to make Southington a better place for youth. Expected outcomes of our initiative:

  • Prevent and reduce substance abuse in the Southington Community
  • Youth will build core competencies
  • Youth will engage in healthy activities
  • Our community will offer safe outlets for recreation
